Terms of Service

Last updated October 22, 2026 · Version 2026-10-22

Read this first. ReelRegs is a reference tool, not an official or legal source of fishing regulations. Rules change during the season, sometimes with little notice, and what we show you can be wrong or out of date. Before you fish, confirm the current rules with the Province of British Columbia for freshwater, and with Fisheries and Oceans Canada for salmon and tidal waters. You are responsible for the rules that apply to you.

These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) are the agreement between you and Reel Regs Inc. (“ReelRegs”, “we”, “us”), for the ReelRegs website, the application, and any ReelRegs mobile app (together, the “Services”). By creating an account or using the Services, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the Services.

1. Who we are

Reel Regs Inc. is a corporation incorporated under the Canada Business Corporations Act, corporation number 1785691-1. Our mailing address is PO Box 55031 RPO Southgate Mall, Nanaimo, BC V9R 0B6. You can reach us at support@reelregs.com.

2. What ReelRegs is

ReelRegs presents recreational fishing regulations for British Columbia on a map, for a water or area and a date you choose. It covers three fisheries: freshwater, set by the Province of British Columbia; and salmon and tidal waters, both set federally by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. It also provides conditions, forecasts, planning tools and a personal catch log.

We may add, change or withdraw features. If we withdraw something you are paying for, section 6 says what happens.

3. What ReelRegs is not

It is not an official source, a legal source, or a substitute for the official regulations published by the Province of British Columbia and by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, or for any notice either of them issues during the season. It does not give legal advice. It does not sell or issue fishing licences, and holding a ReelRegs account is not a licence to fish.

The catch log is a personal record for your own use. It is not a licence, a catch record required by law, or a report to any authority. Where the law requires you to record a catch on your licence or to report it, you must still do that yourself.

Where ReelRegs and an official source disagree, the official source is correct and you should follow it. If you tell us about it we will look into it (section 10).

Your responsibility to check. You acknowledge and agree that you will confirm the rules that apply to you with the Province of British Columbia or Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as applicable, before you fish; that you will not rely on the Services alone to decide what is lawful; that you are solely responsible for complying with fisheries law; and that you accept the risk that what the Services show may be wrong, incomplete or out of date. This acknowledgement is a condition of the licence in section 9.

4. Who may use it

You must be at least 13. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use the Services only with the consent of a parent or guardian, and only they may buy a subscription. By subscribing you confirm you are entitled to use the payment method you pay with.

ReelRegs is for your own fishing. An account is personal to you and is licensed for your own recreational use. If you fish for a living, you are welcome here for your own fishing - what you may not do is use the Services in or for a business: guiding, outfitting, running a lodge, teaching, or telling a client, customer or employee what the rules are.

That is not a judgement about professional use; it is that a guide advising paying clients needs assurances about accuracy, currency and liability that a recreational account is not sold with and that these Terms do not give. We are building something for that. If you want it, write to support@reelregs.com and we will tell you when it is ready.

5. Your account

Some features need an account. Keep your sign-in details confidential; you are responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us promptly if you think someone else has access to it. Give us accurate information and keep it current.

An account is for one person. Do not sell, rent or lend it, and do not share it - except through Apple Family Sharing or the Google Play family library, where those are available.

6. Free and Pro

Every regulation we carry is free, in all three fisheries, and so are the map, search, species and date filtering, following waters and pinning spots without limit, Rule Watch on the waters you follow, live weather with a three-day forecast and sunrise, sunset and twilight times, the catch log, and a Shortlist of two waters. Pro works across your waters: Today on Your Waters, Notice Board, Area Scan, a Shortlist of up to eight waters with conditions and your own history, Spot Check, radar and the full forecast on the map, and Your Year of Fishing.

About Rule Watch and notices. Rule Watch, Today on Your Waters and Notice Board show you changes and in-season notices that we have learned of. They are a convenience, not a safety net: we cannot promise that every change will appear, that one will appear before you fish, or that it will appear at all. Rules change during the season, sometimes with little notice and sometimes without us learning of it. Section 3 still governs - confirm the rules with the official source before you fish, whether or not a change appeared.

We may change which features are included in each plan. The regulations are free today. If that ever changes, section 18 applies: you will be told 30 to 60 days beforehand and asked to agree. If a change takes away something material that you are currently paying for, you may cancel and we will refund the unused part of the period you have paid for.

7. Paying for Pro

Pro is a subscription, billed monthly or yearly. The price, the currency and the billing period are shown before you confirm, and those are what govern. Prices exclude sales tax unless stated; any tax that applies is shown before you confirm and added to each charge. Payments we take are handled by Stripe, and a subscription bought through an app store is handled by that store; in neither case do we see or store your card details.

If you subscribe through an app store. Where you buy a subscription through Apple's App Store or Google Play rather than from us directly, that store takes the payment and its own terms apply to the purchase. You manage and cancel that subscription in the store's own settings rather than in your ReelRegs account, and any refund is the store's to give under its policies and the law. What you get for the price is the same either way.

Terms Apple requires us to include. If you downloaded the app from Apple's App Store, the following apply and Apple requires them to be stated.

If you downloaded the app from Google Play, this agreement is between you and Reel Regs Inc. only, not with Google, and Google is not responsible for the app or its content.

8. What you agree not to do

You agree not to:

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these rules. Where it is reasonable to do so we will tell you first and give you a chance to put it right.

9. What we own

The Services, including the software, the design, the maps, the text we write, and the ReelRegs name and logo, belong to us or to our licensors.

Fishing regulations are made by government and the facts in them belong to nobody. What is ours is everything we do with them: the selection of what to show for a given water, area, species and date; the way it is organised, structured, named and connected to a place on the map; the wording we write; and the database as a whole. That work is protected by copyright and by the law of databases and unfair competition, and it is what section 8 protects.

We give you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the Services for your own personal, non-commercial fishing. We keep every right we do not expressly grant. Commercial use is dealt with in section 4.

10. What you own, and the permission we need

What you put into ReelRegs stays yours: your catch log, the waters you follow, your pinned spots, and any photographs you add if and when the catch log accepts them. We do not sell it, and we do not publish it unless you choose to share it. Other members do not see it unless you do. You can export your catch log at any time and delete your account whenever you like.

So that we can run the Services, you give us a worldwide, royalty-free, transferable and sub-licensable permission to host, store, copy, modify, adapt, translate, create derivative works from, process and display what you put in, and to use it to operate, improve, develop and promote ReelRegs. Modifying and adapting covers the ordinary work of running a service - resizing a photograph, generating a thumbnail, converting a file - as well as building on it. Where you choose to share something, that permission includes publishing and displaying it. This permission lasts while we hold the content and ends when you delete it, except for copies held in backups, which age out within 90 days, or kept because the law requires it.

We may remove anything you add if we believe it breaks these terms or the law, and we will tell you if we do. We do not review what you add before it is stored, and we are not obliged to monitor it.

If you send us feedback, a suggestion, or a report that a rule looks wrong, you are giving us permission to use it freely - to check and correct our data, to keep a record of it, and to act on the idea - without owing you anything for it. We welcome these reports; they are the fastest way to correct an error. We review reports that a rule looks wrong and correct our data where we find an error, though we cannot promise a reply to each one.

11. Your safety

Fishing happens outdoors, often on or beside water and often alone. ReelRegs does not assess whether a place is safe to get to, safe to stand on, or safe to be on in the weather that day. Weather, forecasts, water levels and sun times are estimates from third parties and can be wrong or late. Judge the conditions yourself, take the right equipment, and tell someone where you are going. Do not use the Services for navigation, or to decide whether a route or crossing is safe, and do not rely on them in an emergency.

12. Availability

We aim to keep the Services running but we do not promise they will always be available, uninterrupted or error-free. ReelRegs needs a connection to work, and we may take it down for maintenance. We may change or discontinue the Services; if we discontinue them altogether we will give reasonable notice and refund any unused part of a subscription.

13. What we do not promise

The Services are provided as they are and as available. To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or that the content is accurate, current or complete. Insights, forecasts and other generated or predictive content are estimates produced automatically; they are not advice and may be wrong.

Nothing in these Terms takes away a right you have under consumer protection law that cannot be taken away, including under the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act (British Columbia). Sections 13, 14, 15 and 18 do not limit or exclude any such right or remedy, and apply only to the extent the law permits.

14. Our liability to you

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost revenue or lost data, arising out of your use of or inability to use the Services.

Regulatory consequences. To the maximum extent the law allows, and whether the loss is direct or indirect, we are not liable for any fine, penalty, forfeiture, licence suspension, seizure of gear or catch, charge, prosecution, conviction, legal costs or other consequence arising from or relating to a regulation the Services stated wrongly, incompletely, out of date or not at all, or from an alert we did not send. This paragraph applies independently of the paragraph above, and survives any finding that the paragraph above does not apply.

Our total liability to you, in aggregate for all claims arising out of or relating to these Terms and the Services, is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or five hundred Canadian dollars (CAD $500).

These limits do not apply to our fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, to death or personal injury caused by our negligence or wilful misconduct, or to anything else that the law does not permit us to limit or exclude.

15. Your liability to us

If someone brings a claim against us because you broke these Terms, misused the Services or infringed someone's rights, you agree to cover our reasonable losses and legal costs from it. We will tell you about the claim promptly, let you take over its defence with counsel we reasonably accept, and not settle it without your consent, which you may not unreasonably withhold. This does not apply to the extent the claim arises from our own breach of these Terms, our negligence or our wilful misconduct.

16. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict of laws rules, and subject to the paragraph below.

We do not require arbitration and we do not ask you to give up a class action. If a dispute cannot be resolved informally, either of us may bring it before the courts.

Subject to the rest of this section, the courts of British Columbia have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute, and each of us attorns to them. If you are a consumer, you keep whatever right you have to bring a claim where you live and to rely on the mandatory consumer law of your own province or territory. That includes residents of Quebec, whose right to sue in Quebec cannot be given away by an agreement like this one.

Please contact us first; most concerns can be resolved directly.

17. Ending the agreement

You can stop using the Services at any time and delete your account from your account settings, or from reelregs.com/delete-account if you cannot sign in. We may suspend or close your account if you break these Terms, if we are required to by law, or if we stop offering the Services. Where it is reasonable we will give notice first.

If we close your account for breaking these Terms, we do not refund the rest of the period. If we close it for any other reason, we refund the unused part.

Sections 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18 survive the end of this agreement.
